Characteristics of Hot Melt Adhesive

Hot melt adhesive is a kind of solventless, water-free, 100% solid fusible polymer product. It is solid at room temperature. It melts to a certain extent and becomes a flowable and viscous liquid adhesive. After melting, it becomes light brown translucent or original white.


The main components of hot melt adhesive, that is, the basic resin is copolymerized by ethylene and vinyl acetate under high pressure, and then mixed with tackifier, viscosity regulator and antioxidant to make hot melt adhesive.


Hot melt adhesive is a 100% solid. It melts when heated, solidifies when it touches the surface of air, and then completes in a few seconds. The main advantages compared with solvent and water-soluble formulations are as follows:


1. Instantly, ensure efficient production.

2. No drying equipment is needed to save space.

3. Non-toxic, non-flammable and pollution-free.

4. Long-term storage will not deteriorate.


Development Direction of Hot Melt Adhesive

In the future, with the trend of globalization of hot melt adhesives industry, the demand will be more diversified, and gradually large-scale hot melt adhesives enterprises will also have enough strength to do basic research, actively introduce Jinzong intelligent automation production line equipment to replace manual or increase work efficiency, so as to gain advantages in the market with serious homogeneity of products. Therefore, the development of technology is almost inevitable.


I. High Strength Hot Melt Adhesive

Adhesive strength is the core performance of adhesives. If hot melt adhesives are to be applied to some occasions with high strength requirements, especially those under large structural stresses, it is necessary to improve the bonding strength.


Strong polarity and good wettability are often the characteristics of adhesives which can achieve high bonding strength. Hot melt adhesives are short plates because of no solvent, and their fluidity and wettability. To improve the bonding strength of hot melt adhesives, we should start with the polarity and wettability of hot melt adhesives.


2. High Speed Hot Melt Adhesive

The high efficiency of hot melt adhesives is generally acknowledged, because as long as the hot melt adhesives are cooled, they can harden and form bonds. The bonding speed of cigarette tip stick can reach 20,000 pieces per minute, book binding can reach 18,000 copies per hour, and paper diapers can be produced up to 1,000 pieces per minute.


In the future, the sizing speed of hot melt adhesives will be further improved and this advantage will be expanded mainly by accelerating the hardening speed, improving the thermal viscosity, reducing the specific heat of materials and optimizing the equipment.


3. Low Temperature Hot Melt Adhesive

Sizing temperature is one of the most important concerns of material engineers. Low sizing temperature can not only reduce material damage, prolong the service life of equipment, save energy, but also reduce carbon emissions. Therefore, low-temperature hot melt adhesive is bound to be a promising research direction.

IV. Low Density Hot Melt Adhesive

In many cases, reducing material density to achieve lightweight has many advantages, such as reducing energy consumption and saving resources. In fact, the bonding strength of adhesives depends more on the bonding area than the weight of the adhesives themselves, which makes low density hot melt adhesives a reliable research direction.


Low density can be achieved not only by improving material density (e.g. using polyolefin raw materials), but also by manufacturing processes, such as foamed hot melt adhesives.


V. odorless hot melt adhesive

Nowadays, people pay more and more attention to health. Especially in automobile, sanitary materials, food, toys, furniture and other industries, odorless hot melt adhesive is the best product to reduce the end-user's doubts.


The odorless raw materials should be improved to minimize small molecule substances. Low odor or even odorless raw materials, such as hydrogenated rosin esters, should be used.


6. Materialized Hot Melt Adhesive

Through special forming process, hot melt adhesives can be made into film, mesh, strip and linear materials, which will become a development trend of hot melt adhesives. Nowadays, the market of hot-melt adhesive film, hot-melt adhesive mesh film, hot-melt adhesive tape and hot-melt adhesive wire is growing rapidly. This kind of hot-melt adhesive material is compounded with other materials, which is more conducive to the large-scale production and cleaner production of downstream enterprises.


7. Degradable Hot Melt Adhesive

Environmental protection is a general trend, and environmental protection is a relative concept. Hot melt adhesives, though belonging to environmental protection adhesives, are only harmless to the human body, rather than in the recycling or degradable level of environmental protection. In the future, if we can develop hot melt adhesives which can be easily recycled or degraded naturally, there will be good prospects for development.
